Meta's Hyperscape Lets You Scan and Turn Your Room into a VR Space
So, Meta's been cooking up something pretty interesting. Remember last year when they teased Hyperscape? Well, it's here – or at least, an early access version of it. The basic idea? You can scan a room with your Quest headset and turn it into a photorealistic VR space. Think about it: your living room, but in the metaverse. Sounds wild, right?
The coolest thing is how relatively quick the capture process seems to be. Meta says scanning a room only takes a few minutes. Although, you'll have to wait a few hours for the actual rendering, but while you wait you can do something else, it's not a big deal, I think. At first, you won't be able to invite friends over to your digital pad, but that feature is coming. Imagine having your friends visit your own metaverse, how cool is that?
Real-World Examples in VR
Meta's already been showing off what Hyperscape can do. They've rendered some pretty cool spaces, like Gordon Ramsay's kitchen and Chance the Rapper's House of Kicks. I think this gives you an idea of the possibilities.
To achieve this level of realism, Meta's using some clever tech, including Gaussian Splatting, cloud rendering, and streaming. It sounds complex, but the important part is that it makes these digital environments look good on the Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
If you're 18 or older and have a Quest 3 or 3S, you might get access to Hyperscape soon. It's a gradual rollout, so keep an eye out. I can't wait to try and scan my own room and see what the result will be, it will be awesome!
Besides Hyperscape, Meta dropped a few other metaverse-related announcements. We're talking new VR games like Deadpool VR and Star Wars: Beyond Victory. Plus, their Horizon TV app is getting some love with Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu support. For horror fans, they're even teaming up with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse to bring immersive effects to movies like "M3GAN" and "The Black Phone". There is also a partnership with Universal Pictures and horror company Blumhouse that will offer movies like “M3GAN” and “The Black Phone” with immersive special effects.
All these developments suggest that Meta is taking the metaverse seriously, trying to get people more immersed in this world. For now, I'll be waiting for Hyperscape, the possibilities are limitless.
