Uber's Autonomous Drive: Millions Invested in Robotaxi Future
It's pretty clear now: Uber is serious about getting a big slice of the autonomous vehicle market. They've been partnering with pretty much every AV company out there, from delivery to robotaxis to even trucking. I have to admit, though, I was still surprised by just how much cash Uber's throwing at this, especially with their recent deals with Lucid and Nuro. It's a serious game of investment, and Uber is playing to win.
Speaking of those deals, here's a little tidbit I picked up: While Lucid had to reveal that Uber invested $300 million in them, Uber kept quiet about the Nuro investment, only saying it was "multi-hundred-million-dollar". Well, sources are whispering it was closer to $400 million! It seems like Uber is really betting big on Nuro's tech.
It's interesting to see where talent goes when big programs shut down. Remember when Waymo canned their self-driving truck project? I figured some of those folks would strike out on their own, and it turns out I was right. Boris Sofman, who used to lead that program, started Bedrock Robotics, focusing on autonomous heavy equipment for construction sites. They just snagged $80 million in funding, which is a big deal.
There is more, Amogy, an ammonia-to-power startup, raised another $23 million. Also, Geely Auto is taking its luxury EV subsidiary Zeekr private. Gridserve, an EV charging company, raised a substantial amount. Plus, Pronto acquired SafeAI, aiming for a talent and tech boost. And Via, the transit software company, is trying for an IPO again. It's a busy time in the transportation and tech worlds!
EV Updates and Setbacks
Lucid is rolling out hands-free highway driving in its Air sedans, which is a major step forward. Uber also made a robotaxi deal with Baidu to deploy autonomous vehicles outside the U.S. and mainland China. It seems everyone wants a piece of the autonomous driving pie! GM is partnering with Redwood Materials, and upgrading its Tennessee factory to produce cheaper LFP batteries.
However, it's not all smooth sailing. Rivian will resume prep work on its Georgia factory, but co-founder RJ Scaringe transferred part of his ownership stake due to a divorce. Also, Tesla Cybertruck sales have dropped significantly, being outsold by the GMC Hummer EV. Plus, Tesla is facing a lawsuit regarding its driver-assistance tech in a fatal 2019 crash. It seems there are challenges and setbacks even for the biggest players.
Subaru unveiled its all-electric crossover model called Uncharted, while Tesla finally entered the Indian market. Joby Aviation is expanding its manufacturing facility, aiming to launch its electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles soon. The electric and autonomous vehicle space is constantly evolving, with new developments and challenges emerging all the time. I, for one, am excited to see what comes next!
